What is Cigre?
CIGRE is a source of knowledge about the power system – generate, nett, markets and components. The organization is a network for competence building through the collection and sharing of user experiences.
CIGRE's global community
CIGRE was established in 1921 in Paris and is a global community, whose purpose is to develop cooperation and share expertise in subject areas related to the power system. An important task is to lay the foundations for linking the various local power systems together. Norway has been a member since its inception in 1921. In the center stands CIGREs 61 national committees with thousands of professionals from above 90 country and 1250 member organisations.

Study committees and working groups
CIGRE runs one of the world's leading knowledge programmes, which consists of technical areas that are organized in 16 specific study committees. The study committees cover all the core areas of the power system and organize a number of active working groups in the various areas.
The task of the working groups is to solve specific challenges facing the power system. The groups consist of members with practical and theoretical knowledge relevant to the assignment. Several of the working groups have been established on the basis of Norwegian initiatives where national and international experts participate to solve common tasks.
CIGRE Norway's goal is to have national representatives in all CIGREs 16 study committees and members in the working groups that are relevant for Norway. For the period 2022-2024 CIGRE Norway is represented by at least one participant in each of the study committees. In two of the committees, Norway has the leadership.
Cigre's digital library
The work of CIGRE has through 100 years contributed to the development of many of the most important technical areas in the modern power system.
CIGRE's digital library, e-CIGRE.org, is one of the world's leading sources of objective and fact-based knowledge for the power system.
CIGRE's recognized publications can be found here, developed through cooperative sharing of “experiences from the real world”. CIGRE's study committees have prepared technical reports with the help of their working groups.
The reports are used as a basis for submarine cables, HVDC installations, insulation coordination and in many other areas. There is also close contact between CIGRE and local Norwegian professional groups such as e.g. the user groups for gas-insulated facilities and for power- and industrial transformers.
Next-Generation Network (NGN)
NGN's goal is to get the young generation into the CIGRE world, a place where early career professionals can feel comfortable sharing their ideas and gaining knowledge and information. Here there are opportunities to get involved in CIGRE working groups and technical events.
Students and young professionals (alder <35 years and work experience <10 year) can become a member of CIGRE NGN. In Norway, a national committee has been established. For those interested in joining CIGRE, is NGN a good way to get involved and gain access to knowledge and a professional national and international network

The electricity price
The Norwegian committee for CIGRE works to strengthen Norwegian participation in the exchange of technical knowledge and experience that takes place between the countries within CIGRE in the area of production and transmission of electric power.
The purpose is to raise Norwegian specialist expertise to meet the needs of the energy supply, and also work to ensure that Norwegian products and services achieve higher international recognition for quality and utility.
As part of this activity, the Norwegian Committee for CIGRE awards the "Electric Power Award" for work carried out of high professional quality, theoretical and or practical, within the committee's areas of interest.
The award was presented for the first time this year 1990. The Norwegian Committee for CIGRE is the decision-making body for awarding.
The last time the prize was awarded was in May 2024. Diarmid Loudon, Efla was then awarded the prize for 2023.
